English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL)
Classes
These
are offered free of charge to anyone
wishing to learn English or to improve
what they already know. These classes
focus on conversational English rather
than on reading and writing.
Classes are usually offered in 10-week
sessions and meet on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings. (On occasion, a
morning session is offered with these
sessions.) Several class-levels are
offered to satisfy the student’s needs,
knowledge, and ability: Basic I, II, and
III, and Intermediate I, and II. Classes
meeting in the evening also benefit from
a short, informal, evangelistic Bible
study taught in Spanish.
FBC is
blessed to have over 30 volunteers
trained to teach ESL to the Hispanic
people (volunteers do not need to speak
Spanish). There are also volunteers who
work “behind the scenes” to keep the
ministry going by preparing the
materials used by teachers and students.
All of them give generously of their
time and energy to help Hispanic people
each ESL session. All is done in the
name of Christ and for His glory. Their
reward is great in Heaven!
GED Classes
This
is basically an extension of our ESL
ministry in that it is an advanced
English class for people who can
converse a little in English and are now
seeking to improve reading and writing
it. The focus is more on grammar and on
building vocabulary. They also cover
basic material that will help prepare
the student for taking the GED test in
English.
Other Courses
On
occasion, we offer various other courses
as need arises, such as Citizenship
classes for those seeking to become US
citizens, and basic computer courses for
adults. Please call our church office
for more information.
